Headaches are the most common symptom following a concussion, and are often much more difficult to treat than other types of headaches. Learn how to work with these patients using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

Course Overview

This is the second course in a series on the treatment of patients with concussions and brain injuries. The course focuses on identifying post-traumatic headaches, how they differ from primary migraines, and why they don’t often respond well to standard headache treatments. We will cover the hallmark signs of neuropathic pain and how to conduct bedside functional assessments of the somatosensory system as it relates to neuropathic pain and post-traumatic headaches. We will cover key acupuncture points for treating post-traumatic headaches and discuss specific herbal formulas to address brain blood vessel inflammation, microglial-mediated inflammation, glymphatic congestion, and improving microcirculation in the brain.

Objectives

  • Understand how post-traumatic headaches are different than other types of headaches.

  • Learn the questions to ask to identify the difference between a post-traumatic headache and a migraine.

  • Learn acupuncture treatment strategies for post-traumatic headaches.

  • Learn Chinese Herbal Medicine treatment strategies for post-traumatic headaches.

Outline

  • 0 hrs - 2 hrs

    The first section defines post-traumatic headaches, provides criteria for differentiating migraines and other types of post-traumatic headaches, and provides a description of how they manifest as neuropathic pain.

  • 2 hrs - 4 hrs

    The involvement of the trigeminal system in post-traumatic headache pathology is provided, along with key neurological exams and intake questions.

  • 4 hrs - 6 hrs

    The last section focuses on the use of acupunture treatment strategies and Chinese herbal medicine strategies in the treatment of post-traumatic headaches.
