Course Overview

Please Note: This is a Reading Course.

This on-line course introduces the student to Medical Ethics, and the importance of developing sound ethical behavior in one’s practice. It begins by discussing the history of medical ethics and codes which date back to Babylonian times. It then lists and discusses the four universal principles of modern biomedical ethics and their clinical implications. It then lists and discusses the ethical codes of several Western and Oriental medical associations and organizations, including the AMA and NCCAOM. Finally, the course discusses in detail fourteen potential problem areas for practitioners of Oriental medicine, including informed consent, confidentiality, appropriate referrals, the avoidance of sexual misconduct, and sensitivity to patients' cultural and religious beliefs.
