This webinar outlines the essential concepts of Chinese medicine dermatological treatment principles in a practical and approachable way. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of photographic slides, it presents the fundamentals that are needed to navigate this important subject.

 

This webinar is directed at beginners and advanced practitioners alike. Three brand new case histories of Psoriasis are presented, firstly to outline general principles of the TCM dermatological approach, and then to describe in great detail principles of pattern diagnosis, treatment plan and progress, as well as formula construction and adjustments all the way to the successful conclusion of the case.

Objectives

  • Understand the importace of making a diagnosis of the skin disease before making a pattern diagnosis.

  • Understand the importance of the visual element, not only in diagnosing skin disease correctly, but making a correct pattern differentiation.

  • Recognise the fundamentals of how Heat (at Wei Qi, & Blood aspects), Damp, Toxin, Wind, Stasis and Deficiency manifest on the skin.

  • Learn two common clinical 'pattern types' of psoriasis according to Chinese medicine and how to recognise them in a clinical setting.

  • How to choose 4 of the most common important topical applications to treat psoriasis.

Outline

  • 0 hrs - 15 min

    Course content to be covered during this time: Setting the scene- Drawing parallels between modern day naming of the skin disease and TCM approach of naming disease.

  • 15 min - 30 min

    Description of the metaphors of Heat, Damp, Wind, Toxin, Stasis, Deficiency (qi, blood, Ying and Yang) as it relates specifically to Chinese medicine in dermatology.

  • 30 min - 45 min

    Explanation with examples of the importance of the understanding & applying the concept of 'first diagnosing the skin disease, before establishing the pattern diagnosis. Explanation with example of "first drain then harmonise before tonifying".

  • 45 min - 1.25 hrs

    Introducing a single disease, Psoriasis, to illustrate the concepts introduced thus far. Two cases are presented(one due to Heat&Toxin at the blood aspect, the other stasis of Blood with Toxin)with multiple images along with detailed case histories.

  • 1.25 hrs - 1.5 hrs

    In each case comprehensive analysis of the formulae used initially and subsequently, with break-down of each formula with clear explanation of the ingredients used and their role.

  • 1.5 hrs - 2 hrs

    Further explanations are given as the skin clears, thus illustrating in practise the concept of "first drain, then harmonise before tonifying'.

  • 2 hrs - 3 hrs

    Multiple clinical case histories.

Mazin Al-Khafaji

Mazin graduated as Doctor of Chinese Medicine from the Shanghai College of TCM in 1987. He specializes in the treatment of dermatological, allergic & auto-immune diseases, lecturing widely on these subjects. Mazin is the founder of the International TCM Dermatology Association, author of numerous articles and co-author of the international textbook A Manual of Acupuncture.
