As Acupuncturists' services are more and more frequently being integrated into mainstream medical treatment facilities, many practitioners have a serious need to understand more Western medical terminology, physical examination procedures, and diagnostic parameters. This course is one of four programs in this Basics of Western Medicine for Acupuncturists Series. Courses included in this series are: Neurology for the TCM Practitioner, Infectious Diseases, Musculoskeletal Diseases and Women's Health: Obstetrics, Gynecology, Breast Disease and Infertility. These courses are designed to teach acupuncture practitioners the basics of Western medicine and ""medispeak"" for each of these specialties.

 

This course covers:

(2) The bodies defenses against infection

(3) Antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal therapy

(4) Eye, ear, nose and throat infections and influenza

(5) Pulmonary infections

(6) Cardiovascular infections

(7) Nervous system infections

(8) Infections of the GI tract, liver, pancreas, biliary tract

(9) Urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases Bone and joint infections HIV and AIDS

(10) Other infections: parasites, zoonitic infections, bioterrorism

(11) Blood diseases: anemias

(12) Blood diseases: white blood cell disorders, leulemias, myeloproliferative disorders, hemophilias

Objectives

  • Participants will understand bacteria, viruses, fungi and the infectious process

  • Participants will understand the body's defenses against infection

  • Participants will understand antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal therapy

  • Participants will understand eye, ear, nose and throat infections and influenza

  • Participants will understand pulmonary infections, Cardiovascular infections, Nervous system infections

  • Participants will understand infections of the GI tract, liver, pancreas, biliary tract, Urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases

  • Participants will understand bone and joint infections

  • Participants will understand HIV and AIDS, Other infections: parasites, zoonitic infections, bioterrorism

  • Participants will understand blood diseases: anemias, white blood cell disorders, leukemias, myeloproliferative disorders, hemophilias

Outline

  • 0 hrs - 2 hrs

    Introduction to Infectious Diseases, Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, and the Infectious Process

  • 2 hrs - 4 hrs

    Evaluation of the Patient with Fever;Antibacterial, Antiviral, and Antifungal Therapy

  • 4 hrs - 5 hrs

    Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Infections and Influenza; Pulmonary, Cardiovascular, and Nervous System infections

  • 5 hrs - 6 hrs

    Infections of the GI Tract, Liver, Pancreas, Biliary Tract, Urinary Tract and Sexually Transmitted Diseases

  • 6 hrs - 8 hrs

    Bone and Joint Infections; HIV, AIDS and Other Infections (Parasites, Zoonitic Infections, and Bioterrorism)

Graduating with honors from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Dr. Bruce Robinson completed another five years of post-graduate internship and residency at the university and a research fellowship at St. Barholomew’s Medical College in London.
